The Square smells different this year. Walk from Hickory to Locust on a Thursday evening and you catch smoked brisket from one direction, a rooftop cocktail bar clinking overhead, and a horn section warming up on the Courthouse Lawn. The interesting thing is not that Denton has new restaurants. It is that almost all of the summer's most talked-about openings are landing inside the same six-block box, while the casual lakefront scene quietly gives up ground.
The thesis, in one paragraph
If you have lived here more than a couple of years, your mental map of "where to eat and hang out" probably still includes Unicorn Lake, Rayzor Ranch, and the Square as roughly equal poles. That map is out of date. This summer, the Square is stacking new concepts on top of each other, Rayzor Ranch is picking up a single high-profile anchor, and the lake circuit lost its most reliable trivia-and-burgers spot. Planning your July and August around the Square is not laziness. It is where the density is.
Stacked on the Square
The clearest example is at 122 N. Locust, where two concepts share one address on two floors. Ruby Rodeo opened April 3 with light bites and bar food along with cocktails like the Pink Pony, a blend of raspberry syrup, champagne, lemon juice, ginger and vodka or tequila. Directly beneath it, Red Italian Grill is slated to open this summer with a rotating seasonal menu inspired by Italian comfort food from executive chef Denise Fullmer, according to co-owner Mike Church. One elevator, two very different dinners.
A few blocks away, another familiar name is coming back in a new form. Cody Smithers, who previously co-owned and operated Bet the House BBQ, is opening a new barbecue concept called Smithers Smokehouse focused on classic Texas-style barbecue, aiming to open over Labor Day weekend. For residents who watched Bet the House build a following, this is not a new pitmaster arriving in town. It is a known one betting on downtown foot traffic instead of a destination address.
Two other Square-adjacent openings round out the cluster:
- Bad Habits Music & Events at 1807 N. Elm St. is now open, hosting live music, karaoke, open mic nights and family-friendly dance parties dubbed Good Habits.
- A sign for Al-Lotta BBQ is up at 1003 Dallas Drive, in the building that was once home to Holy Pupusas, with a fresh coat of paint but no publicly shared opening date.
Put those together and the walkable radius from the Courthouse Lawn now contains a new rooftop bar, a new Italian kitchen, a returning pitmaster, and an all-ages live music venue that operates most nights of the week. That is a concentration you did not have last summer.
The Rayzor Ranch anchor
Rayzor Ranch is not competing with the Square block for block. It is winning on one specific thing: a national name Denton has not had before. Kura Sushi is coming to 3400 North Interstate 35, Suite 150, as part of the Rayzor Ranch Town Center, with a 3,500-square-foot renovated storefront. Work on the space was set to begin December 1 with the project estimated to wrap by April 30 of 2026, a positive indicator for a late spring or early summer opening.
If you have kids who care about conveyor belts and robot delivery, that is the summer field trip. If you have out-of-town guests who want "quintessential Denton," you are still walking them to the Square.

For the trading-card contingent, Waxxed Sports Cards is opening a Denton location at 2315 Colorado Blvd., Suite 120, selling sports cards, Pokemon and other gaming cards, hosting trade nights, and holding a June 20 grand opening with free food, giveaways and appearances from special guest athletes. Add it to the family-Saturday rotation.
Free Thursdays, free Saturday mornings
The most underused fact about summer in Denton is how much of it is free.
The Downtown Denton Foundation's free outdoor concert series returns to the Courthouse Lawn on Thursday evenings, and attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or a blanket and grab food to go from nearby downtown restaurants. The "food to go from nearby restaurants" part is the point. Ruby Rodeo's bar food travels well in a paper sack. So does anything from the ring of taquerias and pizza windows on Hickory. Twilight Tunes is not just a concert, it is a permission slip to make dinner someone else's problem.
Saturday mornings belong to the market. The producer-only farmers and art market runs every Saturday through December 20, 2026, featuring local farms, artists, food trucks, live music, and kids' activities, and arriving early gets the best vendor selection. If you have not been in a year, the food truck lineup is worth another look.

What the LakeHaus closure actually changes
Here is the small but real shift on the other side of town. The LakeHaus, a restaurant that served a variety of burgers, sandwiches and salads and hosted trivia nights, karaoke, live music and other events, closed on May 31. Unicorn Lake still has coffee, a grocery, and pleasant walking loops, but its casual-dining anchor is gone for now.
That matters because a lot of Denton's weeknight decision-making used to sort into two buckets: "drive to the lake" or "drive to the Square." With one of those buckets emptier, expect the Square to feel busier on Tuesday and Wednesday nights than it did last summer, especially on Bad Habits' trivia and open-mic evenings. If you have been putting off trying Ruby Rodeo because "it will be crowded on the weekend," a Tuesday visit is your window.
A two-week Denton plan
If you want to actually use everything above instead of just reading about it:
- Thursday one: Pick up an order from a Hickory Street spot, walk it to the Courthouse Lawn for Twilight Tunes.
- Saturday morning: Denton Community Market at 8 or 9 a.m., then coffee on the Square.
- Saturday night: Ruby Rodeo on the rooftop, and see if Red Italian Grill has soft-opened downstairs.
- Sunday: Kura Sushi run at Rayzor Ranch with the kids.
- Tuesday: Trivia or open mic at Bad Habits.
- Weekend two: Waxxed Sports Cards if you have card collectors in the house, dive-in movie at Water Works Park if the calendar cooperates.
- Labor Day weekend: Line up for opening service at Smithers Smokehouse.
Two summers ago, that itinerary would have been half lake and half Square. This summer it is almost entirely Square, plus one Rayzor Ranch detour. That is not a preference. That is where the new openings actually are.
One more thing worth knowing
A handful of announcements are still on the horizon and worth watching. A new location of Mexican restaurant chain Chuy's, located at 1061 Market Way in Argyle, is expected to open on August 24. Two restaurants are currently under construction in the shopping center at Lillian B. Miller Parkway and I-35: King Noodle at 2440 S. I-35E, plus a new sign for Yohe Sushi & Korean BBQ next door in suite 200, with opening dates still unknown for both. None of them will reshape your July, but they will reshape your fall.
